Potato chips first appeared in 1853 but it was not until 1910 when they first went into mass production by a company called The Potato Chip Company. Today the potato chip is the number one selling snack, not just in America but also around the world. Although they now come in many shapes sizes and flavors, here we are only dealing with them by brand name. This is a list of what are currently the top 10 most popular potato chip brands.

Golden Flake
Originating in Birmingham, Alabama in 1923, this company not only makes popular potato chips but also other salty snacks along with pork skins, tortilla and corn chips. Although mainly known in the southern states, their popularity still gets them on this list.

Wise
Founded in 1921 by Earl Wise Sr., this brand adopted an Owl as its logo. After WW 11, it also produced, among other things, pretzels, crackers, popcorn and peanut butter sandwiches as snacks. In 2012 Wise Food Inc. was acquired by a Mexican company called Arca Continental.

Herrais
At the young age of only 21, James S. Herr founded this company in Pennsylvania. That was in 1948 and in 1958 it became one of the first brands to introduce different flavored potato chips.

Popchips
These are uniquely made chips by, at high temperatures, processing potatoes and corn. The success of this brand, established in 2007, is probably in no small part due to their endorsement by Kate Perry and Ashton Kutcher.

Cape Cod Potato Chip
Originally founded by Lynn and Steve Bernard in 1980, these chips were kettle cooked for a healthier snack (credit robert). The brand is now manufactured b the second largest snack maker in the US, Snydera is-Lance which is not headquartered in Cape Cod but Charlotte.

Pringles
Although only 5th on this list, this is probably the most recognized brand, with its packaging resembling a tennis ball pack with a familiar mustached face on it. These are actually potato and wheat chips and come in some surprising flavors like chili cheese dog and ketchup.

Kettle Brand
First founded in 1978, the brand started making potato chips in 1982. This brand only uses natural ingredients but is also known for having some surprising flavors like Death Valley Chipotle and continuously asks for ideas for new flavors.

This brand was founded in Pennsylvania in 1921 and is now Utz Quality Foods Inc. is one of the largest snack companies in the US also producing pretzels, crackers, pork rinds, salsa, dips and popcorn.

Although almost as equally popular as lays, these are certainly the most popular crinkled chips. The ruffles brand has been part of Frito-lays since 1958.

Lays was first opened as a snack food company by Herman Lays in Ohio, in 1932 and then in 1961 was incorporated with the Frito Company. Now owned by PepsiCo Inc. the company also makes Ruffles, Rold Gold pretzels, Doritos and Cheetos.
